Exhibition Statement

I had the honor of designing this shoe as part of the Howard University x Air Jordan x DTLR: Concord 11 'Rare Air' Homecoming Drop event. The competition was open to all fine arts majors at Howard who were encouraged to submit a custom piece celebrating the longstanding collaboration between the university and the Jordan brand; 11 students were then personally selected by Team Jordan to participate in the showcase.

This experience has been a highlight of my artistic career thus far and I feel so incredibly lucky and humbled to have my work chosen as part of this spectacular, once-in-a-lifetime event.

I wanted my piece to pay homage to the formidable genius of the Jordan design as well as the university that I adore; so, I made sure to keep all of the key features on the body of the shoe the same, and merely enhancing them with various landmarks and references that capture the spirit of the Mecca—with the Yard serving as the central subject on the sole of the shoe (being that it is the soul of the campus, after all).

Ultimately, I am very proud of how the piece came out and I very much look forward to the possibility of working with this brand again in the future.
